When You’re Roaming the Spirit World, Ghosts Appear and Two Generals Add or Subtract

[Supernatural · Mazu · Folk Customs · Ritual Processions · Guan Jiang Shou · Yin-Yang Taboos]

People from Min often say that if the higher-ups won’t agree to something, it’s fine as long as Mazu does.

Lin Hai’en, born during Qingming and conceived in the winter solstice, was born with a yin-yang fate and a spirit-sensitive body, with an extremely heavy destiny.

Wandering ghosts and evil spirits harassed him, all wanting to seize his body and replace him.

To seek even the slightest chance of survival, the midwife grandmother carried newborn Lin Hai’en to a Mazu temple to cast holy cups.

Three holy cups later, with Mazu’s protection, Lin Hai’en survived.

...

Years passed peacefully, until the New Year ritual procession.

Dressed in Guan Jiang Shou attire, Lin Hai’en suddenly saw the great dark Buddha Mother evil spirit hiding in the crowd. In an instant, his eyes turned vertical.

Raise the incense atop his head, step the three-step praise, the Increase-and-Decrease Second Generals, kill only and do not save.

Shake your head, and begin the spirit medium ritual!
